Nanci's 2005 Update

After participating in Dr Roe's study, I finally "graduated" in May! My participation in the protocol has been nothing short of miraculous. I completed four visits to Dallas and continue to be impressed by the dedication and hard work of all the people involved in making this study happen. On my final day in Dallas, I got to meet all of the behind-the scenes professionals involved in Dr Roe's study. I had no idea that there were so many other professionals involved in this. It was such a joy to meet them, find out what part they played in the study, and to feel their sincere support for the positive results I've been experiencing.

The quality of my life has been immensely improved by the protocol, and I will continue on it indefinitely. I will continue to be followed in the study on a yearly basis, to look at the longer-term results of this protocol. I now exercise regularly and have more energy than I can ever remember having. I am cross-country skiing, lifting light weights, stretching daily and even doing some pilates training. I have experienced much less muscle pain, which is now the exception rather than the rule. An added bonus has been that my whole immune system seems to have gotten stronger. I haven't missed a day of work due to illness, when I used to catch everything that came my way.

Regarding my work and career, it was interesting what happened once I received an actual diagnosis. The attitude of the administrators suddenly became more accepting and positive. Even though my employer did not officially make accommodations for me due to my illness, they have changed my assignment so that I am working now with younger, smaller students, and the physical stress is less. And, they were also very supportive in allowing me the time off that I needed to go to Texas for the study.

Of course, there are still challenges. Yesterday, when I was out skiing, I realized that I just couldn't get up after I had fallen. I look at these challenges as little reminders that I still have this disorder. All in all, I feel so blessed to have found this protocol. My life is so much fuller, richer and less painful. I have enjoyed hearing from others who have contacted me and would be happy to share any information I have. Be well and happy!
